The Battle Between Dreams and Distractions  by Joseph Owino Adongon,  Freedom, self-expression, and good grades were everything I thought university life would encompass at first. However, after spending a few days on campus, I understood that the independence was driven by fun but had strings attached that could make you or break you. I witnessed students with promising prospects succumb to dreadful vices, all while others were visibly struggling to find the balance between their academics and social life. While a few students were able to stay on the right track, a large chunk of the student population was unfortunately lured into a life-altering trap.   During my first year, I had a course mate named Mike from Kericho who was quite shy, polite, and had big dreams. These are not minor hiccups; they are loud, desperate cries from an institution that was once the pride of Kenyan higher education. How Money Has Hijacked Romance  by JOSEPH OWINO ADONGON. Is love enough without something small?   A  scorching Monday at Moi University, the sun blazing overhead, and a group of friends trudging down the academic highway toward Talai Centre after a lecture in NCT 8. It’s just past noon, and we’re parched, craving a cold soda to cut through the heat. As we walk, a cluster of radiant ladies passes by, their laughter floating on the breeze. I nudge a quiet friend, grinning: “So, any girlfriend yet, or are you still the mystery man?” His reply stops me cold: “ Madem wataku vuruta nyuma, tengeneza   pesa kwanza”,  “Ladies will drag you back; make money first.” The others pile on, their voices sharp: today’s women don’t care about genuine love, they’re after men with money.
